According to the Alpine School District Attendance Policy, "The Alpine School District Board of Education has approved an Elementary School Attendance Policy which defines an excused absence as:

An illness (If a child misses for illness more than 10 days, a doctor's note is required)

A family death

An approved school activity

An absence permitted by the student's IEP plan

Any other excuse established as valid by the school board, charter board or school district

Additionally, an extended absence can be pre-approved if the school collaborates with the parent/guardian to define the absence and provide reasonable make up opportunities.

When a child is absent, the parent or guardian should call to excuse the child from school as early as possible. If the absence does not fit the above definition, the absence is considered unexcused. Some examples of unexcused absences are: babysitting other children, keeping a parent company, dance or other private lessons which happen regularly, sleeping in, inadequate clothing, etc. There are resources available to assist families in overcoming some of these concerns. If a child is excused repeatedly for illness, the school will require a doctor's note to verify the seriousness of the illness.

If your child has excessive unexcused absences, the school will make earnest and persistent efforts to remedy the situation by making phone calls, sending letters, holding meetings with parents and children, making referrals to the district social worker and, possibly, to local law enforcement. Over 15 absences may be referred to the county attorney.

Thank you for your cooperation with us in providing an education for your child. If you have any questions regarding this, feel free to call or visit with the principal.

Additionally, Bonneville Elementary requests that you call the school by 9:00 a.m. when your child is going to stay home. Following any absence, please send a note to the teacher explaining the reason for the absence. Be aware that truant students cannot make up missed assignments.

Tardies

Teachers will mark students Tardy (T) 10 minutes after school begins (8:10 am & 9:25 am)

Students are required to get a "Check-In Pass" from the office if they are over 10 minutes late

Teachers will mark "Very Late" (V) if a student is over 30 minutes late (8:30 am & 9:45 am)

Teachers will mark students "Late" (L) for parent excused late check-ins

Early to School

Students should arrive at school NO earlier than 10 minutes before school begins and should not stay after school dismisses longer than 10 minutes. This is an important safety issue that we are asking all parents to help the school support.

Checking a Student Out of School

For safety and legal reasons, parents MUST come into the school to pick up their children if they need to check them out during school hours. Students will be called to the office after parents or guardians have signed the check-out log. Please do not ask over the telephone to have your child sent home. Parents should not call to ask that their children meet them outside. Please plan ahead to allow time to check your children out of school. Your cooperation of this SAFETY policy is appreciated.

Family Vacations

Notify the office if your family will be gone on vacation, so the teacher can save important assignments for your child to do when he/she returns. No advance assignments will be prepared. We have learned that it is difficult for students to complete them while on vacation and it places a hardship on the teacher.

Closed Campus

Elementary schools maintain a closed campus. Students should not leave the school grounds from the time school begins in the morning until it ends in the afternoon. By parent request, students may be checked out to go home for lunch by a parent in the office.

Policy No. 5158

ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

1.1  The Alpine School District Board of Education recognizes that regular daily attendance at school increases opportunities for students to profit from educational instruction and benefits students' academic learning.  The Board further recognizes that the Utah Compulsory Attendance Law (53A-11-101(9)(e) directs the parent/guardian to enroll and send school-age minors to a public or regularly established private school during the school year of the district in which the school-age minor resides, except as provided in Section 53A-11-102 and 53A-11-102.5.

1.2  In order to support elementary student attendance and the associated learning that occurs in schools, it is expected that each local school will make Earnest and Persistent Efforts (EPE) to cooperate with the parent/guardian to ensure regular school attendance.

1.3.1  Students are expected to attend class, on time, every school day, unless properly excused by a parent or guardian.

1.3.2  Teachers will keep rolls and record accurate daily attendance for all students assigned to their classes.

1.3.3  Teachers will report to the principal anytime their class absences exceed 10% of enrollment.

1.3.4  Electronic roll books are the official attendance records of Alpine School District and will be available for inspection in accordance with the district records policy.

1.3.5  Teachers should contact the parent or guardian after three consecutive student absences. Unexcused absences will be referred to the appropriate authority.

1.3.6  Elementary schools maintain a closed campus. 1.3.7  Excuses for absences typically include an illness, a family death, an approved school activity, an absence approved by the child's IEP, Accommodation Plan or any other excuse established as valid by the local school administration. An extended absence can be preapproved if the school collaborates with the parent/guardian to define the absence and provide reasonable make up opportunities.
